Sarita’s 7 Secrets for Speaking Success

I’ve been asked quite a lot lately “what’s the secret to successful speaking?” I don’t  think that my speaking strategies are “secret”—lots of people use them—however I do find they work well for me.  I hope you find them helpful too!

1. Never share a story without a point; never share a point without a story.

2. Be yourself.   Sharing authentically rather than “putting on airs” allows you to better connect with your audience.

3. Allow the audience to interact and be part of the presentation whenever possible.  For example, ask for a show of hands, have them repeat key phrases or share with person next to them.

4. Remember…speaking is not about you, it’s about the audience.   They want you to address the W.I.I.F.M….“What’s in it for me?”

5. Spend time getting acquainted with individual audience members before your presentation. Great way to learn names, build rapport and solicit “insider” stories.

6.  Use humor.  Someone once said “laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”  This isn’t about telling jokes; it’s about sharing amusing real-life stories and humorous observations regarding your topic.

7.  Practice.  Practice.  Practice.   Knowing your material is the most effective way to get rid of nervousness.
